Amateur Radio License Exam Questions
The amateur radio license exams are composed of multiple-choice questions written by the Question Pool Committee of the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC). The question pools for each license class (Technician, General, and Amateur Extra) are divided into 10 subelements and then further divided into groups, the number of which varies by license class and subelement. The Technician and General class question pools feature a total of 35 groups, while the Amateur Extra class features 50. Because exams are generated by pulling 1 question from each group, the Technician and General class exams have 35 questions each, while the Amateur Extra class exam contains 50 questions. Although the NCVEC has made the question pools publicly available, the actual exams are not. Given the large number of questions in each class's question pool, there are many possible exam versions you could receive on test day.
The question pools are updated every four years. The current effective dates of each pool are as follows:
- Technician Effective July 1, 2014 until June 30, 2018
- General Effective July 1, 2015 until June 30, 2019
- Extra Effective July 1, 2016 until June 30, 2020
The question pools from the NCVEC are provided below, separated by class and subelement. Should the format of the questions not suit your needs, you are invited to download the questions directly from the NCVEC website.
